Herrick Has A New Dance!

I am one music lover that is generally hard to please with female vocals, preferring the gutsy vocals of the likes of Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and blues/rock/folk/country’s Bonnie Raitt, so it was with trepidation that I plugged in the new Herrick CD “New Dance”.  Wow – the tunes that popped out of my player caught my attention so fast I had to turn it up and enjoy!  Donna Herrick as front for the band “Herrick” reaches out and attacks with her powerful vocals and holds nothing back.  She is backed by an incredibly talented trio of instrumentals consisting of Kerry Herrick (Bass/Vocals), Zach Ballard (Drums/Percussion) and Jefferson Rogers (Lead Guitar/Lap Steel/Acoustic).

This first full debut album is a work from their heart as they are constantly writing and perfecting their show for audiences all over.  The lead-in song, “Walk A Mile” is a powerful song about having somebody walk a mile in her shoes.  It covers all aspects of life and gives the listener pause to reflect on what it might be like to live somebody elses life – might not be such a good thing after all.  Great song, strong vocals and instrumentals with honest life content in the words and meaning of the song.

“Drive” is a slower ballad filled with pictures of just driving with no particular place to go.  It’s about being free as the wind right now, “finding a road that goes nowhere”, with “nothing left but white lines” and finally knowing when she is “there”.  I love this song for the pictures it paints – the roads, grass-roots country, no stress, no destination – just being in touch with oneself and the world ahead.  I’ve done that at times myself so this song holds a particular place in my heart – they put the feelings in melodious words accompanied by distinctive instrumentals.  The instrumentals on this album are every bit as good a listen as the vocals.

“Hangmen Hill” has a different story to tell – a tale of 100 years ago when 3 innocent American Indians were hung from the branches.  Nobody has ever been able to bring down the tree because the “roots run too damn deep and like its story it won’t let go.” The widows cursed the tree and when the wind blows one can hear their cries still and the “spirit” of the tree never dies.  “Hangmen Hill” is a ghost-song expertly written and performed with a grass roots folksy genre flavor.

The band “Herrick” is dynamic and appealing to many genres – country, rock, blues and folk.  They have the unique capability of combining the necessary artistic qualities to pull off all genres as well as writing and performing to please all audiences.
