I have been using cat litter for several years and not just for cats, the problem is that they like to track the litter outside of the box. If you want to keep your carpeting clean then you will need something big enough to cover the whole area around the litter box. Cats are strange and just like they do when you leave the lid up on their porcelain water bowl (toilet bowl), if they can make a mess they will. But, since we are forever changing our litter in our cats litter box we look at all of our options, such as price and how well does it really work. This mat that will allow you to catch all the cat litter, is just a run of the mill inexpensive floor covering that will catch all cat litter that they drag out of their box. There are hundreds of different brands on the market today that will do the same thing, but will also cost twice as much.  This mat from Home Classics is an extra large and runs about $9.99 and is a lot bigger than most mats. We purchased ours from our local home improvement Lowe's.

Description
This is blue in color and comes with one side smooth and the other side has ridges and is made of foamy and slip resistant material. This also comes in smaller sizes, but we prefer the bigger one. This litter mat is royal blue in color and is 40" x 25" in diameter, and will allow you to only have to sweep the area around the litter box once a day, because your carpeting will now be properly covered. Your protection of your carpeting will start the moment that you put this onto the floor and under the litter box. This foam mat will help keep the odor down when it comes in contact with any feces or litter, and because the clay litter comes in such small pieces, they will track it a few feet from the litter box when they get out. Instead of sweeping your whole carpeting you will have clean fresh litter box area coming from around the litter box. No more urine smell in or pieces of litter on your carpeting as long as you sweep the mat off regularly.

Experience
We have been using this for quite a while now and have had positive results when it comes to keeping the smell down litter pieces picked up. Plus, the clay pieces do not get tract onto the carpeting or floor after the use the litter. We have two cats and when they do use the litter they only leave a  small trace of it behind. The more litter that you use inside of the box the more chances that they will tract it out of the box and it also depends a lot on the size of your litter box. We have one of those large covered litter boxes, by using this it not only will help keep the smell from getting out and smelling up the house, but it will also give them a chance to shake any litter from their paws before they get out of the box

If you only spread 3" of litter, then there is less to track out. I still remember the first night that we had our cats, when we had to use some newspaper the smell was horrendous and there was litter all over the place in the morning. Since, then we have learned that the litter will stay in the box as long as we don't overfill the box.  We always make sure that we put in a generous supply though, so that our cats will continue to use the litter box and not use any corner of our house.

I have heard horror stories about unruly cats that have behavioral problems and we don't want to endure problems like that. Because, once they start to do that then they will not stop and I will not hesitate to boot them out. But, I figure that if we do our part and make it nice for them, then they will make it nice for us.

Conclusion
I can highly recommend purchasing  this type of litter mat for your cat. This is inexpensive and will leave your room odor mess free unless you forget to sweep the floor from around the litter box. Also remember, that if your dogs happen to get into the litter box and eat the feces, this is also dangerous to them. They could get a disease that will make them incapacitate them. My daughter had this happen to her schnauzer. So, remember scoop, and sweep and you should have no problems. By sweeping this should help to keep the dogs away since if they do not see anything they will stay away.
