Start Your Own Homeschool Lending Library

With budgets tight and extra money scarce, a lending library in your homeschool group or co-op is one way to benefit every member. Do you have curriculum you only have half-finished before you realized it was wrong for your child? Do you have curriculum from years past that all of you kids are too old for or how about children several grades or more apart? Then you have unused or partly used curriculum and books around your house. I started one several years back with books, cd-roms and curriculum I had been given or had used for my three kids. I advertised at the homeschool meetings that it would be available on a lend out basis. I offered to take anyone’s used curriculum off of their hands, catalog it, and make it available to lend out to the whole group. Before I knew it we had about 3000 titles. Anyone in the group could come try out curriculum through the lending library, helping them to make more informed decisions and saving them money. People were swapping one year’s worth of curriculum for another. It was a money saver for everyone in the group. People considering homeschooling could come and see all the different types of curriculum in one place. It is an easy thing to do that only requires time. If you gather several families to help, no one will be overburdened with the work.
