And you thought your parents were terrible...

  • Aug 7, 2010

This is the true story of the Sextons, who might be the worst parents in America.  They tortured and abused their children in the worst ways, and then used the children against each other for their own purposes.  This story chronicles the numerous Department of Human Services investigations that the family underwent, the continuous re-releasing of the children to the parents after these investigation, the one child who finally spoke out against her parents, the family's time in hiding from the law, the murder of two innocent people, and the eventual capture of the Sexton parents.  The youngest children were placed into foster care and adopted out eventually under new names, but most of the children were so abused that their lives fell apart after the arrest of their parents, and they never recovered.  This story illustrates that Child Protection agencies need to do undergo major changes in their strategies for home evaluation and removals.  The workers could see that something was majorly wrong with the children, but were tied by the laws for removal, forced to do everything possible to reunite the family.  Sometimes, some families, such as this one, should not be reunited under any possible circumstances.

In writing this book, Cauffiel uses official documents and interviews with officials involved, making sure to get the story as accurate as possible.
