Hyakko: Lots of Potential that Fizzled Out

In terms of animes, Hyakko started out with a lot of potential: a lot of cute and endearing characters, the always-potent backdrop of high school, amazing artwork, and fan service galore.

Ayumi Nonomura is an extremely shy girl, despite her good looks and appeal for the boys in her class. On her first day, she meets three friends who will change her life: Tatsuki Iisuka, the stern and proper daughter of a high-ranking executive; Torako Kageyama, the wild and carefree rebel; and Suzume Saotome, a quiet, small girl with a huge appetite.

Over the episodes, other characters are introduced: the lesbian class president, the mysterious and terrifying stereotypical ghost-like girl, the busty blonde airhead, etc.. In fact, while the storyline languishes in neglect, each new episode becomes an introduction to a new classmate. This is a tactic familiar to those who've watched Azumanga Daioh, but it never really achieves the level of success that Azumanga Daioh did.  Just when it seems the storyline is about to resurface, it disappears again.

The frustration was only exacerbated by the fansub group that kept going weeks and weeks without updating. By the time the last episode ended, I was left wondering, "What did I just watch?"

Again, all of the elements were in place for this to be a great anime. The characters were wonderful. (I particularly loved the Suzume Saotome character.) Lots of yuri fan service was sprinkled throughout the series. And the artwork was fantastic. But this was an anime with an identity crisis: it's an episodic trying to act like it has a storyline.

wow! I am an anime fan myself and thanks for the warning on this one. I do like the fantasy, action, thought-provoking anime such as "Ghost in the Shell" and Cowboy Bebop. I also recently viewed and has been awed by "Shigurui Death Frenzy" anime series. I reviewed it here, if you're interested.

I'll definitely check it out. I just finished Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and reviewed it. ... *sigh* I've seen so many though, it's hard to know what to review next. LOL ... glad to meet another fan of jidaigeki and anime!

I'm with you. I usually stick to Asian cinema with my reviews (about 90% of the time). I am trying to review more anime as I go. I'll check out more of your anime reviews soon as I get the chance. I've heard of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei but haven't seen it yet. Thanks for the tip.
