A Poor Follow-up to a Really Fun Book

  • Feb 25, 2013

A few years back I read Breather: A Zombie Lament and loved it.  Zombies going to support groups and then petitioning for equal rights, led by Andy Warner.  The prose were written in a very fun and sometimes hilarious manner.  I watited patiently for a follow-up and gladly sent my money off to Amazon for this sequel.  I would not say that it was money spent wisely.

Andy had been sent to a research facility for zombies and has been experimented on for about a year.  All other zombies are either sent to similiar facilities or destroyed.  With the help of a zombie sympathizer Andy is able to escape.  With no clothes available to him, he steals a Santa Clause costume from a manequin.  A little girl named Annie sees Andy and thinks he is the real Santa Claus and takes him to her house.  Annie reminds Andy of his own daughter who just happened to be named Annie too, and he is happy to go along.

The rest of the book plods along with Andy trying to hatch a plan to help his fellow zombies escape from the facility where he was being held at.  Andy's narrative lacks the wit of the first book and there are no supporting characters (unlike the first book) that provide any interest to the reader.  Possible Spoiler Alert:  There is one nuance introduced as the researchers had done "Clockwork Orange" therapy on Andy so now he has an aversion to eating human flesh and depends on a synthetic substance that he was being provided to prevent him from decaying.

I give this one between two and a half to three stars and am not sure if I will be so quick to snatch up future tales.

What a bizarre title!

The title actually occurs in the book (i.e. a guy in a Santa suit gets munched on by zombies).
