This is an exciting novel for young readers, but I liked it too.

Ice Dogs is an exciting novel. It is about how two teenagers named Victoria and Chris spend a week in the Alaskan forest. They guide six husky dogs tied to a sled through the Alaska bush. A bond of friendship forms as Victoria and Chris struggle to survive a week in the dangerous thinning ice and freezing snow. They survive by eating twigs, hare and moose. I can't imagine eating these things for my own survival. Keeping the dogs alive and healthy is another factor that motivates them to survive and get home safely. I love visualizing what Alaska looks like in this book. I think Alaska is a beautiful state, even though I have never been there.

It is so refreshing to see characters who possess unique qualities in a book..Victoria has a talent for hunting and trapping food. She also has a passion for racing sled dogs. Chris has the ability to sew. He uses his talent of sewing to make booties to keep the dogs warm. He also has the ability to comfort Victoria when she feels lonely. Victoria possess masculine qualities. Chris possesses feminine qualities. This book sends a great message to young readers. One important message is that it is acceptable to have masculine qualities and be a girl and vice versa.

Another theme of Ice Dogs is the influence that a father can have a daughter. It is very important for young girls to value the things that their father can teach them. Ice Dogs is a reminder that a parent's legacy can live on in their child after they have passed on.

Ice Dogs is targeted to young readers from fourth grade up. The main character is a brave young girl, which will naturally appeal to young readers. It is also a book that contains the element of friendship and survival. I found these themes appealing enough for me to recommend this book.
