The review by FriedPez will tell you how to get there and the basics of Icehouse Canyon trail. Here are some additional notes.

The name "Icehouse" is accurate part of the year. When there's snow on the ground, you need to watch your footing on iced over rocks and logs. But during the summer, beware. Parts of the trail are very exposed and very hot. If you plan to make it up to the saddle, you'll definitely want to set out early in the morning to beat the heat.

One of the most interesting features of the Icehouse Canyon trail, in addition to the creek, are the remains of houses burnt in past forest fires. You can sit on the remaining bits of rock walls or picnic by a crumbling stone fireplace.

Although I haven't seen much poison oak in this canyon, I have seen stinging nettle in the creek. So watch your footing.

Speaking of footing, there are a few narrow stretches of trail where you have the mountain wall on one side of you and a steep dropoff on the other. If you're a beginning hiker with any fear of heights or vertigo, this may not be the best place for you to go adventuring. It's never precarious, but it's not a place I'd want to hike blindfolded. :)

Regarding crowds, once you get more than a mile down the trail, you'll likely be away from the masses. The last time I made it to the saddle, I only had to share it with two other hikers and two deer.

Icehouse Canyon is one of my favorite Southern California hikes. In the summer I hike up to the Icehouse Canyon saddle, then head on to Ontario Peak or Bighorn Peak. Last time I was on Bighorn Peak I saw 7 bighorn sheep up close! It was surreal!
