A rich, spicy winter beer to savour!

Innis & Gunn has long been one of my favourite beers and this flavourful winter variety certainly didn't disappoint me!

A very light head, in fact almost non-existent disappeared instantly but the modestly carbonated beer was a brilliant, clear but exceptionally dark russet brown that positively glowed with appropriate fall colour when held up to a bright light.

That the beer had been aged in oak casks which had previously held rum was apparent in both odour and taste - a magnificent combination of spice, molasses and rum-tinged alcohol. I have no idea how long the carbonation would have lasted because the beer didn't last long enough to provide a true test. The silky smooth, creamy texture is absolutely spot on for a beer whose obvious raison d'être is the sweetness of hints of rum in combination with the best beer.

My goodness ... who needs Glühwein après-ski when you can kick your feet up in front of the fire and enjoy a beer like this one - delicious and sweet, cools the sweat, relaxes the body, warms the innards and, bonus, it's thirst-quenching in spite of the obvious sweetness. No cloying effect at all.

What a treat! I'm definitely doing this one again before the winter's over! But, have a care ... at 7.4% alcohol by volume this is obviously at least a welterweight in terms of its strength.

Great review and sounds like a delicious winter beer. I'm not sure I can find it locally, but you've inspired me to try adding a touch of spiced rum to some of the more available dark beers. ;']

I like my foods rich and spicy! Not sure I've ever had a beer that was both before though, but I'm intrigued now and want to try :D Thanks for sharing!

Not exactly a beer connoisseur, but I totally enjoyed this review, Paul. (PS, I like Gluhwein!)
