life. A woman researcher (Joliet)finds a dead sea turtle. They first suspect that it was caught in garbage and deformed from a band on its middle. They are not so sure after they find a tracking device inside.
The ship is then hit by a bad storm and the ship's computers do not respond. They end up near an uncharted island that the author has hinted that the Japanese had conducted "experiments on humans" during WW II. With one crewmember dead and another apparently left to the island, the crew forms a search party.
Weird things start to happen that cannot be explained away by things that they know (they blame sharks for some of the things). The searchers are attacked by strange wildlife and later something big attacks the ship and takes one of the female crew members. Pretty soon they are fighting against deadly predators everywhere and it appears that after the war the experimentation had continued and other signs indicate that they are still going on.
The story telling is similar to a Matthew Reilly novel with many "cliffhanger" end of chapters that make it difficult to put the book down. After a while though it starts to wear on you and sometimes I would just read the first page of the next chapter to see what happens and then put the book down.
Hawkins constantly remembers advise from his mentor each time he is dealing with a new danger and I found some of that interesting. The science is a little bit unbelievable but all in all it is a good action book and I give it four stars.
