A few days ago I was perusing the upcoming audio CD releases on Amazon when I came across an album that really intrigued me. It has been a bit more than 40 years since I last bought a record by Jose Feliciano but as I read about his latest project called "The King" I simply could not resist. I ordered it right then and there despite the fact that the track listing was not yet available. I looked forward to sampling this disc with a great deal of anticipation.

As I was listening to "The King" for the first time I thought to myself "how strange". It occurred to me that I was hearing a number of these rock and roll classics for the very first time by someone other than Elvis Presley. Now I must admit that I am partial to ballads and so as you might expect I especially enjoyed tunes like "Are You Lonesome Tonight", "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" and most especially "You Are Always On My Mind". I must agree with another reviewer who pointed out that Jose's work on the spanish guitar on these and other numbers was extraordinary. Meanwhile, I also enjoyed "Loving You" and got a big kick out of Jose's arrangement of "All Shook Up". Quite different indeed! Meanwhile, I was introduced to a pair of Elvis tunes I was not previously familiar with, namely "I'll Remember You" and "It's Midnight". Magnificent! Much to my surprise I thought that the weakest offering on the disc was the final track "In The Ghetto". When I saw it listed I had high hopes but as it turns out I was a bit disappointed with the arrangement. I also thought that Jose's vocal on this one was a bit strained. After all, the man is 66 years old now.

But overall I thoroughly enjoyed "The King". Prior to purchasing this CD about all I owned by Jose was a vinyl "Greatest Hits" package that was released in the 1970's. It is nice to see him back in the game once again. A solid four star disc. Highly recommended.
