A friendly introduction to surfing, surf etiquette with a little yoga on the side

I recently signed @babymama up for a group surf lesson with Kanoa Aquatics in Manhattan Beach.  I've only been surfing for about two years now, but I've really enjoyed it and I wanted to share the experience while giving @babymama a new adventure for her birthday.  Initially, I thought I would take her out and try to teach her, but since I was mostly self-taught, I figured I was probably missing some of the fundamentals so it would be better if she went through a more formalized process.

I think going with the formal lessons was a smart move...  Where I would have charged right into the water and tried to instruct @babymama as the waves crashed around us, the Kanoa lessons started with an hour of stretching and instructions while on the sand.  The instructor first took the group through several stretches and yoga positions to help loosen the body up.  Next, the group practiced paddling and "popping up" onto the surfboard while they were still on the beach.  Finally, the group was given information regarding surf etiquette and safety as well as a few more anecdotal stories.  After all of this, it was finally time to hit the water.

The "dry dock" instructions proved to be very helpful and seemed to make the transition to the water much easier.  While most of the group only lasted about a half hour in the water, everyone managed to get up on their board to some degree.  Having more that one instructor out in the water with the group of four students would have definitely helped as the current in the water and the size of the waves was making it difficult for the group to stick together, so if you have some experienced surfers/swimmers to help out in the water during the lesson, I'd highly recommend it.  Fortunately @ jrjohnson swam out with the group and was a huge help in getting @babymama her first ride.

Kanoa Aquatics provided the boards as well as the wetsuits for the lesson and overall it seemed like a pretty good value.  With just a little more help out in the water the surf lesson could have been even more successful, but even with that said, I highly recommend it.

nice review Andrew. I love the pics too, however, next time maybe try a different angle... with all those tanks in the back ground it looks like they are surfing in an industrial waste disposal site.

I've been wanting to learn how to surf! I went once in Maui when I was 15 and our instructor taught us the same way- beach first, then ocean. I'll have to check out the prices and see if I can work it into my budget! Thanks for the suggestion and review! How'd @babymama like surfing?

She really enjoyed the lesson, but a nagging shoulder injury from rock climbing two years ago made the paddling painful. But I think she'll be ready to get out again soon.

Sounds like the right call as opposed to teaching yourself...from your description, it sounds like the beach instruction was excessive. While I would agree that the instruction on paddling and popping up is crucial, I am not sure if Yoga and anecdotes are necessary for beginner surfers. What do you think?

I think the yoga was really to help more with stretching and getting lose to prevent injuries. The surfing anecdotes is just what makes the lesson more memorable and enjoyable rather than feeling like you're at a lecture. If we go back for round two, however, I'd let let them know that we'll stretch beforehand so we can spend more time in the water.
