Kitchen Aid Has Made Cooking More futuristic

Whenever you start to take on a project such as remodeling your kitchen, you probably won't realize how big of a job this actually will be. But, once you start you usually open up a big can of worms. What I mean, is that since the only reason that you may want to take on a project of this intensity, is if your wife is standing over you are sleeping with a butcher knife or a baseball bat. She called it her little friend, but that was persuasion enough for me. What she did not tell me is that I had to pick out everything myself, but what she did not know is that I had already enlisted the help of a very nice lady from Lowe's . We had discussed, that since we had a 40" stainless steel range, and all of the other appliances in our kitchen were stainless steel, that we should stay in that same area. But, we would have to go a little bit larger on the size on the microwave. That is because a regular built in microwave is only 30" wide, and we did not want it to look too much out place by purchasing too small of a microwave. So, that is when we started looking for a wider microwave and since we could not find any that were 40" wide, we had to do the next best thing, and that was, look for one that was 36" wide. We found this model from "Kitchen Aid", it was the only one that we could find. I am sure that if we wanted to waste a lot of more time looking around at different places that we might have found one. But, it has been my experience that you will usually end back at the beginning and getting the first one that were looking at.

Since this was a special order, we could not see what this actually looked like, all that they had was a picture and that picture did not do it any justice. The other decision that we had to make, is whether or not we wanted to pay $874.00 for a built in microwave. I have never spent over $100.00 for any kind of microwave before, so this is quite an investment for us.  The price of this microwave can run between $849.00 - $949.00 depends on where you purchase it from. This will not include the installation of this unit. In most cases it is usually a cut and dry install, but in our case it was a little different. We had a pocket door, that slid halfway behind the left side of the microwave and I thought maybe they had some new way of mounting this underneath the cabinet, so that we did not have to worry about scratching the door.

The approximate dimensions of this microwave are; 36" wide x 18-1/8" high x 18-5/8" (at the center) deep. Instead of the traditional flat look, this also has a more modern convex look to it, where at the outer edges (right and left sides) where this microwave touches the cabinets, it is 15" deep at the corners. Even though this microwave is larger than all of predecessors, it still only uses 120V to operate it. This has a "TruCapture" ventilation system (new and more efficient to the industry)which will exhaust 300 CFM. You will need to make sure that the outlet that you plug this into is inside of the upper cabinet.

Some of the Features that this has, is 1200 watts of power, soften and melt cycles, boil and simmer functions, an accessory pan which will allow browning, crisping, and pan frying. The insides of this microwave has an easy to clean non-stick surface. A couple of other features is an auto cook cycle, auto reheat, and auto defrost. For filtering the air that comes out preventing any smoke, odors, and grease, a good filtration system is a must, this microwave has two charcoal filters to help you out. This microwave is stainless steel in color and has a very large smoke glass metal shielded viewing window, which is 7" high x 18-3/3" wide. The area inside is a very roomy 2.0 cubic feet of cooking area. This also has a sensor cooking system that will sense how much moisture and humidity that food emits while it is cooking, this sensor will adjust the time while it is cooking, and all of the controls are very sensitive to the touch. No more pushing hard on the number or function pads like you are used to doing, just barely touch these pads and away you go.

Unlike older microwave ovens, this model will allow you to turn off the turntable for manual cooking cycles. To turn this off, there is a turn off touch pad right on the control panel, just touch and select the turn off turntable position. Although, when you are finished cooking manually, the turntable will be reset to the on position automatically. If you need to turn the turntable back on, just repeat the directions and hit the on function.

Inside of this microwave you will get a oven rack, and a 16" turntable. A couple of options that are not usually offered to older models is the child lock and delay start functions. The sensor touch control pad is not located on the left or right side which you may be used to, it is strategically located in the front center for easier access and looks. On the lower left side there are three buttons which control the Halogen cook-top lights that is located underneath to allow you to see what you are doing on top of your range. This button will operate at high, medium, and low. The other two buttons operate the vent fan, the left of the two will operate high, medium, low and off functions. The other button will go straight to either maximum fan position or the off position.

Inside of the microwave you will receive a cooking rack and a non-stick browning pan and handle. The rack is not made to set on top of the turntable, there are 4 little hooks already installed for this rack to set on. They recommend that if you are going to use the browning pan do not use it on top of the rack only on top of the turntable.

Oven Controls
When you see the control panel you will see that it houses all of the main controls and the interactive touch screen. On the main menu, you will see a cook method, manual method, most used, food type, and settings and info touch pad. Right smack dab in the middle you will see the day and date and time am/pm. If you hit the cook method, another screen will come up. This one will display reheat, defrost, cook, boil and simmer, browning pan, and settings and info. If you were to hit the browning pan spot, another screen will pop up, asking what you would like to do such as egg, fish steak, frozen food, meat, poultry breast boneless, and sausage. If you chose poultry, then another screen would pop up asking you how many pieces your doing. Before you put the food inside you first must pre-heat the browning pan, coat the pan with a light coat of cooking oil and start the preheating process. An animation on the screen will come up and show the pan being preheated. Once preheated place food in pan and cook.

There are three types of warranties that comes with this unit. The first is the one year limited one, and this covers the whole unit for one year against any and all defects and workmanship. The second warranty is a five year one, that will cover the heating element and solid state touch control system. The third and last warranty is a ten year one, and this will cover the stainless steel oven cavity and inner door against rusting or any defects.

Once we got this installed and plugged it in, the first thing that we had to do was set the date and time. This is when you will hear a voice talk to you and tell you, Welcome, and if you want to set the clock? Once you have set the clock then you will be able to set the date. If you are a little leary about how this microwave works, it has a demo mode which does have some interesting info in it. It does suggest that you put this in the energy save sleep mode, which after of us not using it, it the screen went dark and only the time and date are able to be seen.

We even adventured into the learning mode because this microwave has so much to offer. The options that are most frequently used are displayed permanently on the face of the screen, these are; start, off, clear, timer, control lock (hold for 5 seconds), numeric pad 0-9, popcorn and meal reheat sensor, microwave time and power, add a minute, keep warm, and turn table on/off sensor. Every time that we use this microwave we do not have to use as much time as we did on our old one and the screen will show an animation of the oven and something being cooked and a progress bar.

So far everything that we have cooked inside of this microwave has taken a lot less time to cook. As long as you use the microwave right it will improve all of your dishes. There are 12 different types of Food Types to choose from (breakfast food, dairy/dessert, frozen food, liquids, bread, grains, snacks, casseroles, meats, vegetables, seafood, and poultry. This has 8 different Cooking Modes and they are; reheat, defrost, cook, boil and simmer, browning pan, melt, soften, and steam cook. There are 9 different settings forReheating your different  foods; beverages, casseroles, meal, muffins, pizza leftovers, rolls, sauces, soups, and manual reheat. There are five different Defrost settings: bread, seafood, meat, poultry, and manual defrost.

On the Cooking Side there are 11 settings and they are; cereal/oatmeal, seafood, pasta, vegetables, couscous, frozen foods, poultry, manual cook, eggs, meat, and rice. The Boil and Simmer only has 5 settings to choose from and they are; couscous, rice, dried pasta, fresh pasta, manual boil and simmer. The Browning Pan offers 8 settings to choose from; eggs, meats, sausages, fish/steak, nuts, frozen foods, poultry breasts boneless, and manual browning pan. The Melting Category has 6 main selections to choose from; butter/margarine, caramel, cheese, chocolate, marshmallow, and manual melt.

If you have hard butter this has a Soften feature which will you to soften brown sugar, butter/margarine, caramel dip, cream cheese, frozen juice, ice cream, and manual soften. Then there is the Steam Cooking feature, this will allow you to steam fish, shrimp, fresh vegetables, frozen vegetables, and manual steam cooking.

On the Most Used Menu, this microwave will (as you use this) choose the most used cooking programs that you have used and display them for quicker and more customized program. If you need to have this part changed then all you have to do is hit the Auto Update feature.

We have cooked bacon to pizza rolls, canned vegetables to rice, beef to poultry, cereals to fresh vegetables, couscous to shrimp, and all of these have turn out superb. I know that you may be concerned about the cleaning of a stainless steel appliance, as you should be. But, there is a very easy solution, and that is use warm soapy water and usually this will clean your appliance sufficiently. If you do want to use glass clean always apply it directly to a rag before applying it to the microwave. Plus you should always rub in the direction of the grain of the stainless steel. "Kitchen Aid" does sell a stainless steel cleaner and polish, if you want to spend the money.

Overall this microwave has been a complete surprise and has outperformed our expectations. This is more than just a microwave, it is a complete cooking system all wrapped up in one package. If you have the money then break down and spend it on this. Five stars out of five.
