"Lagaan," is translated as "tax." The movie, one of Bollywood's more cohesive offerings, is loosely based on fact. The bloody awful British administrator of a draught stricken region offers to lift a tax increase, and, in fact, all taxes if a particular village can field a cricket team that beats the local British team. No spoilers, but it is a feel good movie. Clocking in at over three hours, with about an hour dedicated to the cricket match, it can seem daunting, but it clips right along. Bollywood movies almost always contain songs and dances that stop the plot. "Lagaan," provides the songs and dances but, wonder to behold, they forward and underscore the plot, and are greatly entertaining to boot. Even without knowing the story, or the conventions of Bollywood, the soundtrack stands on its own as a terrific collection of songs. Some are in period, some aren't, but it doesn't matter. Production values are impeccable, the tunes are textured, catchy, and emotionally layered, and not understanding Hindi doesn't matter a whit. My only complaint is it's too short. But even that doesn't stand in the way as the album bears consecutive and repeated listening.
