There are lots of compelling reasons to visit Lake Placid.

It has been a number of years since my wife and I paid a visit to this lovely little village but we are thinking about  spending a few days there in late September. Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York Lake Placid is the perfect place to spend a long weekend or enjoy a week's vacation. I guarantee you that you will not disappointed!

For a village located in the middle of nowhere Lake Placid certainly boasts a rich history. Sports enthusiasts will recall that Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and once again in 1980.  In 1980, speed-skater Eric Heiden won 5 Olympic gold medals here and the U..S. men's hockey team pulled off the "Miracle On Ice" by defeating the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3. The village also plays host to one of the three U.S. Olympic Training Centers so you are bound to find aspiring athletes for both the Winter and Summer Olympic games training here year 'round.  In 1994 the State of New York opened the Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum just outside of town. We have not had an opportunity to visit this venue yet so it will be high atop the 'to do" list for our upcoming trip.  For anyone interested in the Olympics Lake Placid is a definitely a "must see" destination.

There are a whole host of compelling reasons to consider Lake Placid for your next getaway.  There are a number of superb championship golf courses in the area.  Hiking trails abound or if you prefer break out your mountain bike.  Either way you are sure to discover some truly spectacular views.  Folks from all over the Northeast make the pilgrimage to Lake Placid in late September/early October just to view the foliage.  Then in the winter months nearby Whiteface Mountain offers world class Alpine and Nordic skiing opportunites.  Now if you are someone who is simply looking for a place to relax and reconnect with nature then I can tell you from personal experience that Lake Placid would be a great choice.  The pace is noticably slower here. The village is located far away from the hustle and bustle of the urban and suburban life that most of us are forced to deal with on a daily basis.  I always leave Lake Placid feeling relaxed and rejuvenated!

Finally, one of the things I find most appealing about the Lake Placid experience is the shoppingAnd I am definitely not a shopper!   You won't find any chain stores in "downtown" Lake Placid.  Most of the shops in the village offer the handiwork of local Adirondack craftsmen.  You will want to pick up a little something as a memento of your visit.  Very different indeed!   While you're at it don't forget to sample some of the incredible strudel that is made here.  I'm partial to the cherry.  And for added measure history buffs will enjoy paying a visit to John Brown's Farm (yes, the abolishionist was from this area and is buried here) which is an important historical site located in the shadows of the giant Olympic ski jump.  There are a wide range of accomodations in and around town to suit almost any budget.  And I have always been pleased with the food as well.  So if you ever find yourself in the vicinity I urge you to consider a visit to the picturesque village of Lake Placid in upstate New YorkVery highly recommended!
