Lapinator - Blocks the heat & keeps your notebook cooler!
No laptop desk blocks heat like a Lapinator! Only the Lapinator series of portable insulated laptop desks uses 3M Type B Ultra Thinsulate as a barrier to 95 percent of the heat produced by laptop computers. And, unlike those other desks, its comfortable! … see full wiki
I use my Thinkpad a lot. So much so, that I actually managed to cause a minor burn on my leg after using it for a long period of time. I can only imagine what would have happened if I had been using a really hot laptop. Since then I've acquired a small collection of laptop pads.
I have one from Thermaltake that is a mat filled with powder that melts when it gets hot. Interesting, but kind of floppy too. I have one shaped like an X, which I'm sure would be more impressive if I were into video games (it looks like an X box top), but it is really stiff. This one, as they say, is just right.
The two pads lift the main top off your lap altogether, and create an airspace between you and the hot laptop. The top itself is thin, but that's okay because it isn't touching you so it doesn't have to be thick.
The only thing I would change is the top is really slick and the laptop slides around on it, particularly if you haven't installed the optional little feet that tilt the laptop and raise it up for bottom venting fire breathers (they are the two bumps you see at the top in the picture). It would work better for me if the top were non-slip, but it isn't that big a deal.
