Loose Cannon IPA -- Strong, clean, yet average

  • Dec 10, 2010

How does it look? How's the color? Clarity? Head?

  • Pours amber and slightly cloudy, very little head.

How's the nose (smell)? Sweet, spicy, fruity?

  • Strong hops, moderate malt sweetness and just a bit of citrus

How does it taste? Malty? Hoppy? Fruity? Chalky?

  • Mouthful is somewhat sweet but mostly dry and hoppy-bitter

Is it full-bodied? Medium bodied? Weak? Clean?

  • I want to call it full bodied but it just doesn't quite make it.  Medium bodied and a bit too clean for the kind of beer it claims to be--there is an aftertaste that is consistently bitter and doesn't get skunky, but it doesn't last as long as others in this category.

Where did you buy it? How much was it?

  • Birmingham AL, $10 six-pack bottles

What do you think overall? Would you buy it again?

  • The sticker on the bottle says: "Our Loose Cannon Hop 3 is opulently hopped 3 times in the brewing process.  Herbal and aromatic, an amazingly graceful American IPA."  I don't know what hopping three times does to beer (Smirnov vodka is triple distilled and Breakstone sour cream is triple churned but I don't know if this is too much or too little by comparison).  I can say that it isn't 3 times stronger tasting or 3 times smoother.  The initial taste is strong and good.  It fades too fast but doesn't get skunky or grossly sour like some of the higher gravity IPAs can (this one is 7.25%).  It isn't expensive so I'd buy it again but not if there was a new beer to try.
