It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes … see full wiki
I realize that The Beatles have had a huge impact upon modern music. No one denies that. However, even though there are some Beatles' tunes that I really enjoy I think The Beatles are largely overrated--they had a few good years, then got sucked in by fame before having a couple of mini-comebacks before breaking-up for good. I don't dislike The Beatles, but I'm not really a fan. Therefore, I was somewhat reluctant to listen to the "new" Beatles' album, LOVE.
The "new" label on the album isn't really true. LOVE is actually a soundtrack to a Cirque Du Soleil show by the same name. There are no new songs on the album. Instead, the songs on this album are classic Beatles' songs that have been re-mixed and superimposed with each other to create a different flavor and style of music. The core of most of the songs really haven't changed all that much in the transition. It's the beginning and endings of these new mixed and combined songs that are different and that make this album unique. To be honest, there are a few songs on this album that I had never listened to before in their original form, for example "Within You Without You". Hearing songs such as that in their new form is refreshing. I'm beginning to discover things about The Beatles' music that makes me appreciate their impact much more than I did before.
As a whole, the album flows together almost flawlessly. However, therein lays the only major drawback I can find with LOVE. The album fits together well, but each of the songs played individually don't stand up as well. That's not to say the songs are bad. It's just that not all of them play very well as individual tunes.
I'm not sure how Beatles fans will react to LOVE. There are many who will probably love it while others will be dismayed. The album is sure to attract some new fans to the band's music and it at least fosters a greater appreciation among music fans whom might not be Beatles fans. LOVE is a fitting tribute to an original band.
