I love beer. It's a known fact that I cannot deny. Lake Charles, LA has always lacked in that area. Sure, I can pick up a Bud or a Coors Light anywhere in town, and most places have Abita or Shiner, but usually the only "imports" offered are Corona and Guinness. Now, I really love Guinness, but I really enjoy trying out other types of beer from across the world as well. Thankfully, the good Lord above gave Lake Charles a place called MacFarlane's Celtic Pub. It's been open for well over a year now, but it wasn't until just a couple of months ago that I discovered this wonderful place on Ann Street.
I started meeting up at MacFarlane's with a friend when he got off of work late on Saturday evenings. If the kitchen is open (we usually get there too late), we enjoy some great Scottish and Irish-inspired food. MacFarlane's has a good menu that features food like Scotch eggs (awesome!), lamb pot pie, and Irish stew, as well as a number of sandwiches.
Of course, my friend and I don't always go to MacFarlane's for the food. Many times, we go strictly for the wonderful beer choices that they offer. My friend has never been much of a beer drinker. He's always favored mixed drinks. However, since he's been hanging out with me, I've turned him to the dark side of the alcohol world and he now enjoys quite a few types of beer. Our ultimate goal is to taste all 140+ offerings of beer on the menu, and we are well on our way to achieving that goal.
So far, my favorite brews have been Optimator Spaten and Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin.
Now for those of you who aren't quite ready to leave the fair shores of the U.S.A. on a tour of the beer world, there are plenty of domestic brews available, including Flying Dog's Road Dog and Acme IPA.
You can even suck down an O'Doul's if you'd like.
While the beer and the food (and the beer, whoops, I think I already said that!) enticed myself and my friend to MacFarlane's, it's the service and atmosphere that keeps us coming back for more. The pub has some of the best waitstaff I've encountered in Lake Charles. They remember you when you come back and, in a few cases, they actually recall what you ate and/or drank when they last served you. It's nice to walk into a place and be recognized by someone other than your friends.
The pub also offers up live music from time to time and they even have Pub Games on a weekly basis. These games range from simple (or silly) trivia to a game called Pin-The-Kilt-On-The-Scotsman.
Overall, MacFarlane's is a great place to just hang out, have fun, and knock back a few brews.
Highly recommended. I'm a repeat offender at the place!
