The Car I Always Dreamed About!

Growing up if there was ever a fictional item I wanted to own it was Speed Racer's car The Mach 5 (don't know if there was actually a Mach 1 - 4). I remember that this car was so sleek looking and sounded so cool when Speed was racing it along in the Japanese Animation series which was one of my favorite programs growing up.

The car had a white body with a cool shaped "M" on the hood written in red. There were two tail fins on the back, no roof and no bumpers. It was way more cool than a Corvette. The only cars on TV that even came close to it in cool styling were the gold sportscar that Maxwell Smart drove (in the later Get Smart seasons) and the Adam West Batmobile.

I remember that this car could virtually fly and had a type of pogo stick device that came out of the bottom which allowed the car to do jumps. Anytime Speed went someplace there was always Sprittle and Chim Chim hiding in the trunk (you wonder why he was always surprised when he found them).

About a year or so ago I was in a McDonalds and I noticed that the toys with the kids meal were the Speed Racer movie toys. I was telling my son on the order line how I loved the Mach 5 and apparently the order taker heard me. When I put in my order he presented me with a nice prize. A Mach 5 free of charge! This momento now occupies a proud space on my desk at work! And to think it only took about 35 years to get the car of my dreams though it is a Matchbox size!

Nice review, Michael! Who knew that you'd partially fulfill your dreams at a Mickey D's? :P The fictional car of my dreams would be the Batmobile. Pretty much indestructible and I'm kind of partial to black!

When I grew up the Batmobile was the car used by the Adam West version of Batman. It was cool but not as cool as the Mach 5. I guess the later versions, especially the one used in the Dark Knight movies were a lot cooler. I just added the Green Hornet car (Black Beauty) so maybe you can rate that one too!
