Another Fun Read By An Emerging Genius!

Max Barry is the master of the fun corporate farce! All his prior books were fun reads (Syrup, Company) and this one is no exception. Charles Neumann is a robotics type engineer who accidently loses one of his legs at work. When the company he works for wants to pay for a prothesis to replace the leg he lost, Charles realizes he can make a better leg than what they can provide. In fact his new leg is so much better that he starts to realize that it outshines his own leg. This gets him to thinking that maybe he would be better off with a matching set of artificial legs.

The read can see where this one is going. Especially at the urging of Lola, Charles's new found love and a woman who has a "secret" replacement body part. Her story is compelling especially, how her father got her her "replacement" part. The one thing the reader can't see is the company's reaction. They realize that this can be something as desired as regular plastic surgery and start marketing all kinds of "cosmetic" and superior replacement body parts.

The story is so crazy that it could be "believable." Barry has a natural talent for bringing "Dilbert-like" situations in the business world to life in a funny way with characters that act like people do in the real corporate world.

I've heard funny things about Max Barry, but I have yet to read one of his books. I often get him mixed up with Dave Barry, who I've read. He's a hilarious writer! Excellent review, Michael!

Max Berry has 4 novels that are usually about cubicle type business dwellers (Think of the movie Office Space) but he usually comes up with an off-beat idea that everybody seems to agree with. You should probably read the book "Company" first and then "Syrup" and you will know what I mean. These books were both excellent, funny and people that work in the Corporate world probably know people at their jobs like the people he describes and how they go along with the weird ideas.

I love the film "Office Space!" So, I have a good feeling I would enjoy Berry's novels. I'll keep these titles in mind. Once I get a new library card in Santa Barbara, I will be reading again!

Not the comic book character but it is a really dark but fun story.
