Gentle chill-out music is an art-form that does not get explored much. The best chill music combines the relaxation qualities of new age music with some pulsing beats that serve as subtle reminders of what the dance-floor offered earlier in the evening, but on a milder level. A perfect example of great chill-out music is the CD called SKETCHES FROM AN ISLAND by Mark Barrott.
Think of it as the perfect album for a quiet dinner party. The main instrument is synthesizer, sometimes pulsing with a beat and other times spacey and floating. Barrott also plays some acoustic and electric and slide guitars. Other sounds include steel drums, wood-flute, congas, a little piano and violin, and percussion.
This is intriguing music since it bridges from almost danceable beat tunes to some of the gentlest relaxation stuff around (ending with just the sound of birds chirping -- nature, the ultimate relaxation zone).
