Ladies, you know how hard it is to find a decent salon and how it's impossible to find that decent salon near your home. This has been my mission for awhile and I have found my winner...Mark of Excellence Salon in Hermosa Beach!
I came across this salon and liked that they said they took the time to ask you about your lifestyle, habits and morning routines, etc. If you ever have a problem with recreating a style, come back and they'll lead you through it for free. If you don't like your cut or color or anything, come back and they'll fix it for free. Oh, and the free beer part wasn't too bad either! Do you see a pattern?
I was running a little late but, was greeted by my stylist, Laura, who is so incredibly cool, there's just not enough space in this review. We sat down and had a little consultation-I hadn't had my hair done professionally in a year (because of the economy and my prior lack of a job). I had also tried to self-medicate with store bought dye. If you ever want to make a stylist cringe with agony, use the words "I dyed my own hair."
Mark, the owner, wanted to know if I wanted anything to drink- tequila, scotch, wine, beer, water...vodka and Red Bull. I thought he was kidding until a man came in later and sat waiting in a barber chair, Mark pardoned himself from his client and brought the man 12-year-old scotch. Another man came in "just to say hello". It felt like home and I wondered if this is how those New York barber shops are like in the movies.
As Laura started on the color correction, and boy is that an understatment, Mark was going to go grab some dinner and asked if I wanted anything. Well, I hadn't eaten all day so, yes please- I'd love some. He bought us the BEST Tomato and Basil soup from Creme de la Crepe that I've ever had.
At the end of four hours, fully fed, I faced the new me in the mirror and couldn't help but clap my hands in excitement. It's exactly what I wanted. Laura had found it even with my way-too-vague descriptions and "whatever you think" answers.
Mark oversaw the last bits of styling and offered me some free anti-frizz/shine serum that had a price tag of $11. He told me to come back tomorrow and he'd have a bag of goodies ready for me. Yay more free stuff!
For color correction, highlights, cut and style, dinner, and style products (all stuff to make your hair its silkiest, shiniest best), I was only charged $134. You guys know how I like my down-to-Earth, affordable places because of my Ragin Cajun review. Mark of Excellence is that and so much more, they'll make their mark on your hair and in your heart.
