It cost her the election. If she had had the sense to say something like, "I was so busy nurturing a billion-dollar business that I failed to do the due diligence regarding the maid that I hired. " Meg Whitman would likely be the next governor of California. It was the absurdity of her responses that demeaned her.

Everyone hires "foreign' born people for these positions. Who cares whether or not they have papers. It is not up to us. We are not the government. We pay an incredible amount to them in taxes so let them do their job. If you find someone who will take care of your house or your kids and are good at it, that is all that counts.

The whole situation was really unfortunate and I feel badly for her maid, especially since she had been working for her for so long. It was really poor form for her to cast away her long time maid just because she felt like the set up didn't click with her campaign. Unfortunately for her, the maid fought back. If she had never fired her maid and people dug up her immigration status, then Meg Whitman could have quite possibly used that in her favor, perhaps something about immigration reform. As it stands though, she handled this whole maidgate situation poorly from start till now and that seemed pretty apparent to voters.
