There are probably more devotional books available than different translations and editions of the Holy Bible. You can find a devotional for any topic in creation and for every possible season of life, both the literal four seasons and the metaphysical seasons of the soul. I was first introduced to Ken Gire's MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR at a Bible study in college. Our instructor used the book from time to time to supplement some of the passages we studied. I later learned that MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR is actually a collection of four separate devotional books by Gire (INTENSE MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR, INCREDIBLE WITH THE SAVIOR, INSTRUCTIVE MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR, INTIMATE MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR) with twenty new devotions.
The book begins with a short introduction. Then the devotionals follow. There are sixty-six devotionals total. Each devotion begins with a passage from one of the four Gospels. The scripture verse is followed by an extrapolation of the scripture story. This expansion of the story is followed by a prayer.
The heart of Gire's book is his imaginative expositions. These are what separates Gire's devotional book from similar devotionals. Gire is a gifted storyteller and he does a remarkable job of placing the reader in the moment at the scene the scripture passage describes. It is these brilliant expositions that touch the heart of the reader. Often, they force the reader to look at the scripture from a perspective they have probably never thought of before.
Gire himself never loses the focus of the scripture in his writing. However, those who use MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR as a devotional should remind themselves that the expositions are just that; they are based upon the scripture and mixed with some history, but, colorful as they are, this version of the story isn't necessarily how things went down. It's just one man's imagined interpretation.
MOMENTS WITH THE SAVIOR is an excellent devotional book on the Gospels. The devotions can provide one with some valuable insight and fresh perspective into the scripture. At the same time, the expositions are taken from the imagination of one man, so be careful not to think of them as being complete Gospel truth.
