Austen purists, step away! This is not for you. However, if you love Austen and don't mind someone taking a few (OK, quite a bit more than a few) good-natured liberties, you will almost certainly enjoy this fast-paced sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Berdoll paints a beautiful scene, and I'll admit I found her Pemberly to be much more tangible than the original. Her use of language is especially enjoyable as it is not only vivid but also feels appropriate for both the concept of the novel and the setting. Austen fans will particularly enjoy the development of Lizzy and Darcy, both as individuals and as a couple. One of my favorite things about this book was how Berdoll expands on Austen's characters without redefining or changing them; few other sequels have been so successful in this. Lizzy doesn't become a simpering twit once she and Darcy are together, and although the pair are clearly deeply in love, they remain (happily) just as strong willed as Austen originally wrote them. Although the plot is more than a bit silly at times, the novel is thoroughly enjoyable, paying tribute both to Austen and to modern day readers (and don't worry, the sex scenes between the newly wed Darcy's are as demure as if written by Austen herself...almost). By far my favorite Austen sequel.
