Fascinating Tale During Difficult Times

  • May 1, 2011
From the opening pages of this memoir of Samuel Gorsky (later changed to S. Stanley Gordon) I was mesmorized. This is the tale of someone who dealt with a difficult childhood, laced with racism against his Jewish upbringing and then virtually having to go into hiding with his emotions. During the 1940's there did not exist an Internet so it was amazing how Samuel learned about the "gay" world for which he yearned to belong.

Samuel had to be careful in school, dating women he wasn't attracted to and making sure to drop each one after a few dates. This kind of gave him a "Don Juan" personna. Though he was gay, at a few points of his life he was actually attracted to a few women. He ended up married to women twice, once through love and once for convenience.

Later "Stanley" was brought into the entertainment field and worked with a lot of huge names in the business. One of his lovers later in his career started him into producing Broadway plays.

I really enjoyed this book a great deal and though the second half of the book gives a good look into the inner workings of entertainment, I liked the first half better as Stanely had to hide his urges and struggled to find himself. This is a fairly quick read and definately good material for a film!
