To know me is to know that I hail from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I now live in the sunny Southern California metropolis of Los Angeles. Please be clear on a couple of things. Men in Michigan behave much differently than they do in in California. For example, no man that I know in Michigan has ever been waxed, on the back, chest or other uh...sensitive spots. Also, we Michiganian men do not ever go in for a recreational mani-pedi...EVER. In fact, it has taken me years to even be able to say (or type) mani-pedi. Please, don't even get me started on the number of men in this town that proclaim with pride: "Ya know, I'm just not that into sports". Seriously, if I said that at home, I'd have to fight.
I digress, but I offer this background to let you know how foreign it was for me to be standing in front of the "men's products" area of CVS. I am on camera for a hosting gig that I do and the makeup artist asked me what I used to wash and moisturize my face. I let her know without hesitation that I wash my face and body with whichever shower gel is on sale when I run out. For "moisturizing", I put on lotion. She then told me that I need to use a face wash and moisturizer. Yikes, it's off to the Mary Kay or Avon lady, I thought. I'm going to become one of "those guys". Would I start ordering wine at bars? Would I stop wearing clothes in favor of "outfits"? Could I really choose to soak my feet and have my fingernails buffed over watching the big game?
So...back to the "product section". I spotted the Neutrogena Men Invigorating Face Wash. I'm not going to lie, it was on sale...that drew me. They actually put "MEN" in the product name. Nice. Finally, who wouldn't want to make the experience that much more enjoyable with something that claimed to be "invigorating". A quick look over my shoulder to ensure no Midwest types were ready to pounce me and I was off to the checkout counter.
5.1 fluid ounces...less than half of a beer and four times the cost. OK, I'll look past that. I took the bottle home and couldn't bear to use it right away. What's wrong with my shower gel, I thought. I went back to the familiar routine one last time. The very next day, I decided to jump in and use the Face Wash. Let me tell you, it was a joyful experience. First off, it was a hot day and the "invigorating" part was VERY refreshing. This is due to the 12 ingredient listed on the bottle - menthol. The cooling, tingling feeling sure made me FEEL cleaner! When I was done, my skin didn't feel as dry as it did with my trusty shower gel.
So, the face wash part of my new mandated face maintenance is handled and I need to tackle the whole "moisturizer" thing. I actually bought another "product" for that, but that is for another review and maybe some suggestions will come my way.
Once I got over my MichiMidWestMan issues, I figured out that there might be something to this whole product thing. I might even purchase Neutrogena Men Invigorating Face Wash even...when...(gasp)...it's not on sale. My makeup artist will be happy and maybe I'll keep getting carded at bars too. BONUS!
