Pros: Joining Epinions just may be life threatening
Cons: But who cares?

October 14, 2000, I was a guest at my first Epinions gathering in White Plains, NY, hosted by ACDC711 (Denise) and REMIND (Zo). There are many things to be said about Epinions, some positive and some negative, but strangely enough we are nothing but a bunch of people looking for a way to blow off our mouths - with the sweet bonus of getting paid for it. That said, perhaps I should give you a little background about an Epinions gathering:
As the title implies - that is how I met up with the infamous Wingdman (who by the way made it in from Kansas or some other Godforsaken land), our resident Stout Advisor. We, (ACDC, Remind, SurgRN911 & I), met up at Dooley Macks Publick House around 3:00 for the 4:00 meeting. ACDC had picked up JasonNYCity and brought him along, so there we sat and it is well after 4 and no one has shown up. We are starting to survey the hefty food table thinking - "What are we gonna do with all this stuff?" - when up the stairs trundles the Wingdman, stout in hand, smile on his face and he says "Anyone looking for a Winged Nut?" (Some kind of personal joke with Surg, I'm not going there...lol...).
Suddenly some of the tense moments left (after all, this was a lot of work for these two...but I digress), hugs were given all around, gifts exchanged (see what you guys missed - we had presents...lol), and oh, yeah, drinks were flowing. ACDC & Remind had to scurry out to pick up Mage67 (or dengny) from the train station, Surg & I went down to feed the parking meter and while we were gone dengny (or Mage67) arrived. Now I may have the pick up and arrive wrong - but these two guys showed up, so all was right with the world again.
Surg & I tripped down to the bar for another round of drinks (they were still setting our bar up and SusiDee NEEDED a drink, well so did Wingdman, but who's counting?), and low and behold when we returned there was ikkalj (she can't pronounce it either, so don't try to figure it out), looking quite spiffy I might add, with her darling husband - as she says "He's the one over in the corner sipping his potato juice" .... I asked twice, she said potato....lol).
Now we are ten, a far cry from the scheduled 20+, with a phone call from deeljea with a desperate plea cause they were lost. Fortunately, about an hour later she showed up and brought along a newbie, Cynthea995 and also Sj1and0. Needless to say, food for 30 people now has to be consumed by 12 Epinioners and a hubby who was drug reluctantly along for the ride. On to the chow, and the hospitality shown us by Dooley Macks.
Appetizers included stuffed potato skins, mozzarella cheese sticks, and calamari. I tried the skins and they were fine (ok, I had 5-6, so I guess they were better than fine) and the cheese sticks, which were good as well. I don't do floating things, but they were well received and I guess that is all that matters. There might have been one more appetizer but SusiDee remains in a mind fog (ahhhh, those Tequila Sunrises strike again!).
After appetizers we had a little more mingling time - sure some drinking time too, Wingdman had to get more stout and did I mention Tequila Sunrises? - so we went over the presentation packages what Denise and Zo had prepared for us. These two sweet ladies had a folder for each of us that included everyone's profile page and at least one Epinion from each one attending - yeah, we got them for the no shows too, but that's another story - with some note paper and an ink pen so we could take notes. (By the way, my pen didn't work, but I managed!). At this time Denise let us know Sean Fitzpatrick had a prior engagement (something about his wife and a birthday or something - imagine!), but he had sent along some goodies for us - cute little Epinion dolls in the shape of the four colored logo balls - you know what I mean, come on!
Then the food hit - a succulent roast beef, some chicken thing that I heard had mushrooms and wine sauce (can't believe I missed an alcohol thing), a pasta dish (had some of those floating things in it, so I can't tell you about it either but it smelled good), a veggie tray, rosemary potatoes and smashed potatoes. The presentation was very good, the food hot and remained hot, the wait people helpful, kind and understanding (one waitress gave us a wonderful Irish brogue), and they boxed up all the left overs for us to take home. We took home more than was consumed.
Surg and I belong to picky eaters anonymous, so we were probably the wrong people to come to this party. I was fair though and ate the roast beast which was very tender and juicy, the rosemary potatoes but they had a tad too much rosemary on them (just my take) and the smashed potatoes. Surg ordered a hamburger and FRIES (imagine, huh?). Anyway, the entire thing cost us $20 a head for one whole heck of a lot of food, desserts supplied by Remind (Zo), plus the cash bar.
We had been putting up with (hmmm, perhaps that is too harsh a term?) Wingdman's serenading us with several (a whole lot actually) Irish parody songs when Denise piped up and informed us that Sj1and0 was a singer so we harassed her into singing for us (well, frankly she was easy to sway, we only had to ask).....while I'm thinking ANYTHING to shut Wingdman up for five minutes would be fine! In fact, Sj1and0 had a beautiful singing voice, she sang acappella with a jukebox blaring in the background and the TV on the other side with some baseball game on (hey, does anyone know who was playing???). It was an honor to hear her sing!
So, all in all, a delightful meeting. I got to meet some great people and now they have faces and I have a whole new group of fine people to read! If you get a chance, attend an Epinions gathering in your area, it is worth the trip!
Now a word from our sponsor (Don't I always complain?) This meeting had been scheduled for approximately two months, if not longer. There is a lot of preparation that goes into each and every meeting of the minds that the Epinionators decide to organize. In addition to hanging out on this glorious site, most of these people have real jobs or real lives off the internet.
So to organize a meeting, contact the prospective party goers, investigate meeting areas and try to find an inexpensive rate and affable menu to all, arrange for transportation, confirm the information with Epinions and with all the people interested in attending - well, you get my drift! IT'S A LOT OF WORK! In addition to that, you (in the collective sense), have made a commitment to the hosts (Remind & ACDC) who in turn makes a commitment to the hosting restaurant (or whatever).
In addition to this, the hostesses continue to supply information to us (the party goers) on a regular basis as well as communicate back to Epinions about what is going on. After all, they have a stake in this as well - it is their name that will be bantied about, so they want to put on a happy face. So I say - hats off to two great women that did one Hell of a job organizing a gathering that ended up not as large as hoped (Uh, I think they got stuck with a bill!), but what was there was fine. Please trundle off to my profile page and pick up links (bowing to the hyperlink Gods once again) to the other people that attended this party - hopefully someone will write an outline on it ...... COME GUYS, DON'T DROP THE BALL ON ME!
Again, thanks Denise (ACDC711) and Zo (REMIND) and Sean Fitzpatrick, travel manager, for the cute Epinions dolls. Can ya crack a rib from laughing uncontrollably for 3 days?
