Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

Also entitled: Why You Should Never Put a Cat in a Vampire Movie.

Because seriously, we all know this isn't going to end well for the poor kitty.

To be perfectly honest, the cat is one of the reasons this movie doesn't get a higher rating from me. If you've ever read the book, you know that poor Oscar the cat doesn't actually belong to Lissa. He belongs to their housemate from chapter one. Rose has a one-sided conversation with him, and that's the last you see of him. So when Lissa put the cat in her backpack at the beginning of the movie, I knew it was highly unlikely that poor Oscar would see the end of the movie, and I was right.
The reason I hate this so much? I'm owned by a beautiful kitty of my own, and situations like this one are one of my worst kitty-parent nightmares. I dread coming home and finding out someone or something has harmed my cat. So on the side of animal mutilation in this movie, not a fan. That said, the fox thing did actually happen in the book; the second animal was actually a rabbit. Not that makes me feel any better about it, given that I also quite like foxes and rabbits. It's one thing to read it, but its another to see it right in front of you. I'm honestly surprised that they showed something as graphic as that in a teen movie, the body of the dead cat had me trying not to cry, because I can easily replace my own cat in that scenario, and its awful.

Okay. Now that I've vented about the cat, I can get on to the rest of the movie.

First off, I don't think this is a bad movie. Cat death aside (I kept hoping Lissa had saved him), I actually think it's a pretty decent movie, and a decent adaptation of a pretty great book. I still can't decide if I liked Lissa or not. She definitely had shining moments but something about her seemed off to me. I can't place it entirely, but she just didn't seem like the Lissa I had imagined. Although I did sort of get to like her more as the movie progressed.

And Dimitri. I really wasn't keen on Dimitri. I think it might have been the hair.

Because honestly, its not like Dimitri ever really had that much personality to begin with, even in the book, so I wouldn't have thought he'd be that hard to get right. But apparently I was wrong. (Although to be perfectly honest the main reason I don't like Dimitri is because I liked one of the other guys Rose dated better!).

but Zoey Deutch was what really made this movie. She wasn't anything like I imagined Rose to look like, but she had her snarky attitude down to a tee, complete with comebacks and serious backbone. Seriously, she kicked butt. Even when she was getting her butt kicked, she kicked butt.
I think it's easy to forget the age of kids in books, because so often they act like they're older, and I often find myself falling into that trap. Deutch actually portrays Rose as a teenage girl, even when Rose herself acknowledges that she is anything but a normal teen. She was the best choice EVER for Rose Hathaway, and you should go and watch this movie just for her.

So, to sum up...
Animal mutilation and death: Bad. Very, very bad.
Movie: Actually pretty good and worth a watch.
