Quality Images for Serious Photographers

I am a loyal individual and so I thought Canon would be it for me in the photography world. After all, my first manual fixed-lens zoom camera was a PowerShot A620 and I was, and I am still, happy with the photos it produced. Unfortunately, the image quality of the photos could not translate from hobbyist to professional photographer. So in choosing my professional camera, I was really partial to Canon. I was comfortable with the brand, I knew how to use the functions and I loved, loved, loved the swivel screen for sharp angled photos. Unfortunately, Canon does not produce a professional caliber DSLR with a swivel screen LCD and live view. But guess who does? Olympus.

I ended up getting the new Olympus E-30, which offers all the great DSLR features and full manual control options. But the features that actually sold me on this camera are as follows:
  • Swivel LCD screen
  • Live View
  • Art Filters - great black and white texture, pinhole look and other fun features. Helps save on having to buy lens filters.
  • Dust Reduction - Olympus is the first to bring this to the market and it's proven to keep the digital sensor pretty clean. It's a pretty amazing technology actually, a little filter between the shutter and the image sensor vibrates 30,000 times per second when the camera is turned on, which means dust is flung away and your photos are always clear.
  •  In-Camera Image Stabilizer - This is in-body technology to reduce blur-free photography. Also, helps save money so you don't have to pay extra for image stabilizing technology in each lens.
I read the entire technical manual twice when I first got the camera and it's an opportunity-filled piece of equipment. It was a horrible and dry read. But if you're going to pay over $1200 (including tax) for a camera body, then you better know how to use all the functions. Otherwise, you could just make a camera body out of a shoe box and just invest in a good lens.

A good photographer can take good photos with any camera, but a photographer needs a good camera for good quality images. So far I've been very pleased with the image quality of my Olympus E-30 (aka Mr. Olympus, the other man in my life, as my husband calls it). The photo gallery on my website (sogophotography.com) features a mix of shots from my PowerShot A620 and my new Olympus E-30 can you tell the difference in quality? Yes, no? Let me know.

Cheers!

So far so good with Olympus, but I would probably switch back to Canon in the future - they offer more equipment options. They need to add a swivel screen LCD and live view to their DSLRs though.

My first SLR camera was an Olympus, until it met with an unfortunate pool accident. The accident lead me to Canon, which I am an ardent fan of the camera, but would not close my opinion of an Olympus dSLR.

to get a Cannon loyalist to switch brands... this must be some camera... quite an endorsement!
