The first book in the "Twilight Saga" by Stephenie Meyer.
I downloaded this book shortly after getting my Kindle for Christmas since it as a free Fantasy download at the time. I finally started the book a few months later and became intrigued.
The main character is Kita a shape-shifter who has run away from her home dimension and been on the run for 5 years on Earth. She’s run away because she is the smallest shifter of her clan, shifting only into a calico cat, not a very big or bad animal to be. The problems arise when she is attacked one night by several young men in the town she’s in thinking she’s an easy mark. In her panic her claws come out and she “tags” several of them. Kita runs once more and ends up in a new town and hunted by shifters from her home there to return her. This time Kita doesn’t have the strength enough to fight back, has lost too much blood and gets turned into a vampire in order to save her.
There’s a lot to the story of Kita coming to grips with losing her ability to shift, having created rogue shifters that are killing at random and, of course, her growing feelings for the vampire who changed her.
It’s a fun read, nothing deep and philosophical but a good way to pass a few hours of escapist time.
