The story as a whole is what's great about this one.

One piece is about a young pirate boy's dream of being the pirate king.  The world of one piece is interesting that that many of the pirates have special abilities given to them by the devil's fruit - fruits scattered around the world that gives whoever eats them a unique special power.  The main character, Luffy, has the ability to stretch his body like rubber.  He basically goes around recruiting members into his pirate crew and sets sail in search of the legendary treasure, One Piece.

One piece isn't known for each individual episode.  For some reason, each episode isn't really that memorable but the story/arc as a whole is what gets you.  When I first watched this thing, I thought it was whatevers for the first 20 episodes but all my friends said to give it up to episode 50 and thats when it starts getting really good.  So after a few months, I decided to take their advice and give it another shot.  And boy were they right about it.  The story gets a lot more interesting and grander as you hit around episode 50 when he goes into the grand line.  This is where he begins the epic battle as he climbs up from a nobody and becoming one of the most wanted pirates by the marines.  And like Bleach and Naruto, you get to slowly see how he gets more and more powerful as the anime progresses.  I really enjoy this type of character development in animes, as opposed to the ones where the main character just starts out with his super powers and never really gets any stronger like the american comics.

There's currently 400+ episodes and the manga is still going, and from the looks of things, this series won't be ending anytime soon.

If you do decide to give this anime a chance, better be patient enough to watch the first 50 episodes because its around there when you'll realize whether this anime is for you or not.  I know, it sounds a bit extreme to have to go through that many episodes to figure out if the anime is for you or not.  But all I can say is, I'm glad I did cause I'd be missing out on a great anime had I not.
