One day a few weeks ago, as I am wont to do when folding clothes, or doing some other busy work in the bedroom, I turned on GAC to catch the latest releases and old favorites. In these situations the music is usually nothing more than background noise, something the keep me company while I toil away. But, a video came on the caught my ears and eyes; One Voice by the 12 year old Bill Gilman.
At first I thought a young girl was singing the song, and that the young boy pictured singing in the video, was just a prop. But I was soon to learn differently; I saw him perform the song the very next day on the Rosy ODonnell Show and was amazed at the richness, control, and clarity in this youngsters voice. Gilmans high and pretty voice is beautiful, sweet and innocent and lends considerable authenticity to the song.
One Voice is a stirring tune, done well. The song is at once sad and inspirational, tear inducing and hopeful, soft yet energetic. The song begins with the lofty tunes of a lone piano, which will play throughout. The piano is soon joined by Gilmans sweet angelic voice filled with young innocence and promise. Harmony is introduced as a violin, its melody soft as silk, smooth as satin, adds its musical tones to the mix. The musical arrangement on One Voice is by itself worth notice; the piano and violin are always beautiful and soul searing when played together. The lyrics of One Voice are true to life and speak to contemporary American issues. Here they are below:
Some kids have and some kids don't And some of us are wondering why. Mom won't watch the news at night There's too much stuff (that's) making her cry. We need some help Down here on earth A thousand prayers, a million words But one voice was heard.
A house, a yard, a neighborhood Where you can ride your new bike to school. The kind of world where mom and dad Still believe the golden rule Life's not that simple Down here on earth. A thousand prayers, a million words But one voice was heard. One voice, one simple word Hearts know what to say. One dream can change the world Keep believing till you find your way.
Yesterday while walking home I saw some kid on Newbury Road He took a pistol from his bag And tossed it in the river below. Thanks for the help Down here on Earth. A thousand prayers, a million words One voice was heard. One voice was heard. One voice was heard.
How many of us can identify with the deep lyrics of this song? The message of the song is all too clear: we need spirituality and purpose in our lives in order to maintain a proper balance. Quite a message from a twelve year old with an angelic voice only God could have blessed him with.
Even though I have heard One Voice a dozen times, it never fails to send ripples of emotion through my breast. Not willing to buy the CD yet, I downloaded One Voice this evening from Napster and played it for the spouse; she promptly fell in love! I think you will too
