Great Teacher, Annoying Class

  • Jul 2, 2010
I already think about the meaning of life, identity and whether or not there is a God every second of the day as it is. In Philosophy 110 you sit in class for an hour and discuss these things non- stop. When I first found out after transferring to LMU that I had to take a required philosophy class on Human Nature I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested. Who doesn't want to know what other people think and what ancient philosophers ideas were on these concepts? However after sitting in this class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a whole semester I was so relieved to take the final and leave.

Now don't get me wrong I had an amazing teacher (Dan Speak). He was funny, interactive and really took to heart what students said. He didn't shoot you down unless he was being sarcastic and really encouraged the class to do the readings and participate. One day he even stuck his wedding ring in his nose to show how big his nostrils were, very amusing. However the content of this course made me stare out the window and have mini nervous break downs every meeting. Like I previously said, I already contemplate life on a daily basis and it drives me crazy, so being forced to do so in a formal setting for 3 hours a week was not exactly what I wanted to be doing in class. Plus when we got to the idea of whether personal identity was mental or physical the content was completely over my head and I just couldn't grasp what the point was sitting there and trying to answer things we never would be able to.

In the end I got an A so I really can't complain too much. I guess I understand why it is a core requirement because some people are different than I am and just go about their days without contemplating the meaning of life at all. I get that the university wants to force it's students to think about what they want to do in life and get motivated. However, most students take this class as a freshman who are just entering the scary world of college and I took it as a second semester junior who was ready to get out.

Thanks for writing this review because it helped me understand why I was also so disappointed taking this class. For a subject that is so a part of everyday life, this class offers nothing valuable for me that I could retain or use after the final.
