With Barack Obama's swearing in as the 44th President of the United States just hours away, I thought I would take some time to share my thoughts on this truly historic event.

I am not a democrat, and I am also not a republican. I voted for Obama. My decision was not based on partisan politics, but on a genuine gut feeling about Obama as a person. He exudes this kind of certainty and determination. He is witty and is a wonderful public speaker. I believe him when he tells us that he is going to make government work. Look what he's done already...he is past the most difficult part - he (and countless others supporting him) got a black man elected into the White House.

Obama talks a lot about getting everyday citizens more involved in our government, and his message is that ALL of us need to make changes, and work at this, in order for our country to get on the right track for a successful future. I received an email from the Obama administration today, asking me if I would like to sign up to receive emails from them in the future regarding what I can do to make a difference. I signed up for it, and will wait and see if/how this new administration responds to "normal" people like myself. I never got anything like that in my inbox when Bush was sworn in.

I am excited for tomorrow's events and I hope that all of you take the time out of your day to turn on the television, log onto a news website, or flip on the radio around noon to witness the swearing in of Barack Obama, and I hope that even those out there who did not vote for him this time around will give him a chance to prove that he really is the right man for the job.

AS a Democrat from th 1960s I'm holding my breath. Everytime they compare the Obamas to the Kennedys I can't help cringing. Don't they remember that didn't end well? I know what they're referring to but all that conjures up in my mind is momories of 3 assasinations; JFK< MLK< and RFK> That pretty much killed the naievete and hope in my generation. I couldn't believe it when I saw Obama walking down the street unprotected in the parada. I kept waiting for the inevitable gunshot. I guess I've just lived in the south too long. Bigotry and hatred are alive and well, people are just alot better about hiding it than they used to be. Still I hope for the best.
