So I don't write a lot of reviews for Amazon products anymore, too busy and all that, y'know...but la dee da, I'm wandering around and I stumble across THIS! and so I am inspired to write something brief to share my love for this wonderful little disc.

Sometimes you hear new music and it completely changes your paradigms. I came across Luc Ferrari and musique concrete in my earliest explorations of the avant-garde, and I wasn't sure what to expect. To say my mind was blown would be an understatement. "Presque rien no. 1" (1970) was the first thing I heard, and its magic completely enthralled me. It basically uses recorded sounds to tell the story of a fishing village "waking up," and it's so beautiful and intense and wonderful. Of all the masterpieces composed for magnetic tape (might be a short list, eh?), this is perhaps the most profound of all to me. How can something so...pedestrian, capture one's interest so intensely? Such was Ferrari's uncanny ability -- to combine unpredictability with a harmonious substructure in such a way is really remarkable. The other "Presque rien"'s, also on this disc, are likewise wonderful, especially "Presque rien avec filles" which is widely considered a musique concrete classic. Then there is "Music Promende", another musical epiphany. This one uses snippets of city life, folk-music, military parade, political speech, and more, polyphonically combining these elements into a real COMPOSITION -- although the sounds are environmental recordings, they have been very carefully arranged to create their own organizational principle that feels utterly intuitive and compelling. As far as the avant-garde is concerned, this music is eminently listenable and pleasant, and downright beautiful at times. Recommended not as a good cd to buy, but as a musical treasure that can change the way you appreciate the music of our world.
