Killer Unicorns!

This was a book that I really wanted to love. It's a young adult book with potential for strong female characters and a great concept: What if unicorns were real, and were dangerous killers that could only be slain by female virgin descendants of Alexander the Great?

When a friend first pointed the book out to me, it instantly went on the list of books that I wanted very much to read, and so when the chance at a copy came along I jumped at it. It didn't take me long to start reading either, and here I ran into the first problems. The main character set right in with annoying me with her whining. I gave her a few chapters to get over it, but as the story progressed she only got worse.

The concept of the unicorns lived up to what I hoped for and more. There was mystery, a little romance, a lot of action. The worldbuilding was good and the general concept was also enjoyable, even if there are some things inherent in the concept that lead to some instant logic questions, but despite all that good the book ended up being only okay as far as I am concerned.

I never could warm up to the main character, she spent far too much time whining and waffling about her situation and far too little time dealing with it. But worse than that was the fact that a casting premise (Female virgin descendants of Alexander the Great) that should have lent itself well to a great book for young women ended up perpetuating the very issues that the book liked to make fun of. This a book where a woman's virginity is the ultimate prize, but male sexuality is unimportant, and that frustrated me. In the end I think I'd have liked it better if she'd included a few male descendants and made their 'purity' equally important.

Still it wasn't bad enough that I regret reading it, perhaps partially because I haved had a lifelong love of unicorns and anything that includes references to Bucephalus definitely earns a couple stars from me. I'm only sorry it wasn't something I could fall head over heels in love with.
