According to Rep. Jackson, iPad technology is evil and the cause of our bad economy. Here's his quote from the house floor…"A few short weeks ago I came to the House floor after having purchased an iPad and said that I happened to believe, Mr. Speaker, that at some point in time this new device, which is now probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs. Now Borders is closing stores because, why do you need to go to Borders anymore?"
Yep, that's right the iPad is assembled overseas but it is sold through many stores giving employment to other workers. A kindle version of this technology was also sold in the above mentioned book store chain, so I guess they also brought about their own demise. But could it be something more, that brought down Borders? Like maybe bad management? Take the time to read Publisher's Weekly for the real scoop.
So let's talk about the evil e-books that are ratcheting up sales each year. Let's discuss their evil intent. First off, many times you can buy an e-book at a discount over a paper book. So it saves the consumer money. Since publishing it is cheaper, more authors can get published. Wow, that's putting more people to work! Oh, and the Sierra Club will like it too as e-books save the destruction of all those trees.
Now let's discuss the actual books that Rep. Jackson is bemoaning the loss of their bookcase space. I wonder when the last time he looked at a book closely was. I have no doubt that he is an avid reader. But has he read the first pages or the jacket flap that shows the details of where the book was printed and or assembled. I do all the time when I'm reviewing books. Go ahead look for yourself. You'll see that many of them are printed overseas. So do we bring it full circle and now just blame all the publishers who put those books in Borders and other book stores for eliminating all those jobs?

Very interesting QT, Christine. I think there are a lot of pros and cons to the e-readers and e-books that are now sweeping the world. My hope is that there will always be real books despite the advances with technology because there are certain segments of the population that are oftentimes denied these privileges because they don't have the money to purchase such technologies. Until this type of equipment is provided by the government, there will be inequalities to the types of information people can get, and knowledge is a right, not a privilege.
