Sours are mixed drinks containing a base liquor (bourbon or some other whiskey in the case of a whiskey sour), lemon or lime juice, and a sweetener.  These drinks have been in existence for at least 140 years with the first reference I could find dating to 1862 in the book "How to Mix Cocktails" by Jerry Thomas.

The Rum Sloe and Sour follows the traditional construction but includes both lemon and lime juice as well as two sweeteners (Sloe gin and simple syrup or grenadine)

A while back I published a review on my blog for the  Juan Santos Gran Reserva – 12 Year Old Rum .  With the review I published a cocktail I called Arctic Wolf’s Juan Santos Sloe and Sour. The creation of this particular cocktail was a progression of simple steps from a well known classic cocktail, The Whiskey Sour, to the Rum Sour, and then the final step to my cocktail.  I chose the starting point as a classic whiskey cocktail because I recognized a whiskey like flavour and  delivery in that particular rum.  Of course once I had the cocktail created, I have tried it with various rums and have found it to be remarkable well suited to almost any dark rum.

Rum Sloe and Sour

an original cocktail by Chip Dykstra (Aka Arctic Wolf)

2 oz of  Dark Rum
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 oz Lime Juice

Add the Dark Rum, the lemon and lime Juice, and the syrup or grenadine with the crushed ice in a Martini Shaker.
Shake gently to chill the mixture.
Pour the mixed ingredients into a cocktail glass adding the ice.
Float the sloe gin on top and serve. Enjoy!
