Don't mistake favorable geography for a good pubtrans system...

Yes, you can live in SF without a car. No, that does not mean the public transit system here is good. San Francisco is an extremely dense urban area, second only to New York City in the united states. That means its easy to live here without a car because you don't need to travel very far even if you are going a long way relatively speaking within the city.

That being said the SFMTA , like many of san francisco's locally-administered services, is rife with fat cat ism, huge salaries, ridiculous collective bargaining agreements, incompetent bureaucrats, cronism and as much transparency as mud.

Now they are trying to give us our 4th round of service cuts AND fare hikes since the Recession started with not a dime of pay cuts. Everybody who works in every private industry in the City has seen their paycheck shrink except these guys. All I ask is they pay their fair share of what is causing all of us to suffer.

Here are my ideas for getting Muni back under budget:

1) Fire nate ford and rehire someone who knows how to do the job and will do it for 100K less per year.
2) Get out the ballot measure and smash the MTA Operators collective bargaining agreement, and get their pay down 30% [-24% of obligatory, contracted raises since the recession began and -6% of a paycut just to put them down a bit equal to the rest of us, who are down 10-50% on average], eliminate compulsory raises, and merit based pay only.
3) Cancel the $11B train project to Chinatown thru union square and spend it on a train down Geary instead.
4) Fire any driver who habitually fails to collect fares.
5) Fire any driver causing an accident that costs the city over $1M.
6) Fewer stops and more express buses during rush hour.
7) Then and only then, raise fares to make up the deficit.
8) Crack down on handicap placards or eliminate them entirely.
9) Then and only then, even with collecting fares and busting down on handicap placard abuse, should they be able to raise fares, raise parking rates, or enforce Sunday meters.

All really great ideas! I don't think they should do away with handicapped placards, I think it's important that those that are handicapped enjoy our beautiful City as much as the rest of us. They do need to cut down on drivers abusing the system. I was on a bus once when the driver pulled over to get a soda! MUNI is ridiculous and you'd think that they could get it together to cover SF, I mean, we're not that big!

Sounds like the public transit system in Frisco is rife with the same problems that plague mass transit all over the country. And frankly, I just don't know how you fix it. You have some good suggestions though.

Hear, hear, m³! It's hard to believe that not too long ago, The Gav actually thought about making some pub trans free in SF, and now they're hiking up the prices to ridiculous rates. Great suggestions. Somebody needs to forward this review to the city of SF! ;)

I live in San Francisco and I definitely agree with what you have here. They should stop messing with people and look at the problem at the source. I can't believe they are thinking of extending hours for parking meters to include even Sundays. The city won't make any money since most cars will be in private garages for $ 10 a day. Good write up!
