EDIT: In Februrary, 2010, an updated version of Slingplayer was released that works over the 3G network! Hooray!
The last phone I had was the Treo 700wx from Sprint. As far as I was concerned, it did two things -- made phone calls, and let me stream my tv to my phone via Slingbox and the Slingplayer software. I've since moved on to the iPhone, and despite the iPhone's superiority in EVERY OTHER WAY, I was still nostalgic for my one killer app -- the Slingplayer.
In May of 2009, Apple, Sling Software and AT&T finally released the Slingplayer for iPhone software out into the world. Without hesitation, I dropped my $30 at the iTunes App store and picked up my copy. It was even better than I had remembered -- touchscreen interface, larger display, killer design. YES! YES! Now my iPhone was complete...
BUT, there was a catch. Due to the immense success of the iPhone, AT&T preemptively crippled the Slingplayer software out of fear that its bandwidth requirements would saturate their network. As such, the Slingplayer software only works on WiFi -- not over 3g or the EDGE network. Even though the same software is available on other AT&T phones without this restriction, iPhone users must be tethered to a WiFi network in order to use the app. Granted, it's not too hard to find a Starbucks with free WiFi, but this does mean that my goto app while waiting in line at Costco or sitting in the drive-thru line at In-N-Out can no longer be the Slingplayer. **START RANT HERE** Even though iPhone users are paying a PREMIUM over data plans compared to ALL other AT&T phones, they are getting less service than others on the same network. This is just crap and it really pisses me off. Rather than improve the network with the dump trucks full of money which have essentially fallen into their laps courtesy of the iPhone and their exclusive deal with Apple, AT&T has instead decided to cripple the users paying the most for their cellular service. **END OF RANT **.
The app itself deserves a +5 rating, but until the 3g/Edge streaming issue can get worked out, I'm keeping those extra ratings for myself. Hopefully AT&T/Apple/SlingMedia... or whoever, can work out the logistics to give iPhone owners the same experience as other mobile sling users.
Looks great on iPhone
Cool interface with touchscreen and overlays
$30 seems a little steep
