Did you know that there are around 2,700 species of snakes? Did you know that not only are there no snakes in Ireland, but there are also no snakes in New Zealand and hardly any in Hawaii? These are just a few of the fun and curious facts about snakes found at the begging of Roxie Munro's SLITHERY SNAKES.
The book is full of facts and lots of information about snakes, specifically 9 different types of snakes that it discusses in detail. There is a two-page spread of just the "skins" of each of the 9 snakes with a few clues to get readers to try to guess what kind of snake it is. This is followed by two pages of information about the snake and an illustration of each creature. The snakes that are examined in SLITHERY SNAKES are: Coast Garter Snake, Emerald Tree Boa, Western Coral Snake, Spiny Bush Viper, Shinz's Beaked Blind Snake, Easter Diamonback Rattler, Red Spitting Cobra, Yellow-bellied Sea Snake, and the Reticulated Python. The book includes a glossary at the end along with a short bibliography and a list of relevant websites for more information.
Overall, this is a fairly straightforward book about snakes. The youngest readers will enjoy looking at the skin designs and will be impressed one way or the other with the illustrations. Recommended for students pre-K – to about 3rd grade.
