My daughter was one of those babies that woke constantly during the night. At 4 months old, we thought it was just one of those baby phases and would eventually pass…6 months later, my husband and I were both cranky, sleepy deprived and desperate for a solution. During this time, I read several books, followed the advice of numerous other moms and tried every idea out there to get her to sleep more than 2 hours at a time. I was adamantly against letting her “cry it out”, feeling it would be too cruel, but out of desperation, I gave in and purchased Dr. Ferber’s Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems.
Dr. Ferber begins his book with the science of sleep, discussing REM sleep, sleep patterns and the importance of nighttime routines. He then moves on to address a variety of sleep issues parents may face with their children – limit setting at bedtime, waking to eat, night terrors, bed wetting, etc – and how to solve those problems. After reading Dr. Ferber’s approach to bedtime difficulties and nighttime wakings, my husband and I put his “progressive waiting” into practice – And as he predicted, it was not easy going. The first 2 nights were painfully HARD, but by the third night, thing had begun to improve considerable and by night 4, she was not only sleeping through the night, but her naps had also improved.
Although I have not read his entire book (since certain chapters did not apply to our situation), I would definitely recommend his book to other parents dealing with bedtime issues. As I mentioned earlier, it is not an easy approach, but it does work as long as you are willing to put in the time.

Wow, this sounds fascinating. I had no idea that this could be done! Putting this on the list of baby shower gift possibilities. Thanks so much for sharing, Stephanie!
