The stability ball may well be one of the greatest creations in the history of exercise equipment. Although its roots are in physical therapy, the ball has been used by top athletic teams, pregnant women, senior citizens and anyone who wants to develop bodacious abdominal muscles. Never has there been a piece of equipment, and a simple one at that, that has appealed to so many different groups of people.

The stability ball poses a challenge for your dynamic balance, which is balance in motion. As such,  you need to activate your core muscles, which provide dynamic stability. This means that no matter what part of your body you are exercising, you are always using your abs. Now how cool is that?

The stability ball is also versatile. It can be used for strength, flexibility, agility and even aerobic exercise. It can even be used in home gyms. No room for a weight bench? No problem. Most weight training exercises can be performed on the ball.

Here's an article about the history of the stability ball, which includes guidelines for choosing a ball.

Here's an example of an upper body exercise that can be performed on the ball:

I seriously don't get it about the ball chairs, nor do I understand those balls that have the little rocks inside them that supposedly keep them from rolling around. Kind of defeats the purpose!
