I don't care how "closed-minded" it makes me look to not like this band, but I honestly have gotten very little enjoyment at best from Sunn O))), at worst crushing boredom. To be fair, their cover of Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a rather creepy piece of music, but other than that, I haven't heard much else that gave me anything of lasting value. For the most part, Sunn O)))'s sound can be described as highly downtuned guitars and bass played with the slowest pace imagineable without any percussion, all while the band members dress in robes.
This is the type of "innovation for innovation's sake" BS that annoys me a good deal, as it seems like the band is doing this just to say "Hey, look at us!! We're musical geniuses just because we've done something no one else has done before!!," totally disregarding the fact that what they're doing is ridiculous.
Now metal music doesn't have to be lightning-fast thrash and death metal to gain my approval, but even doom and drone metal bands have to come up with interesting songs that'll grab me. Thankfully bands like Ahab, Electric Wizard, and Jesu are there to fill such a void in my life.
To get a taste of how utterly boring and pretentious Sunn O)))'s music is, here's the band playing live in Germany 2006.

I had to check if my headphones were broken when watching that Youtube clip, but they were fine, the video was just noise. I burst out laughing when the smoke machine came on and that guy just stuck the guitar in the smoke, it was so silly. great QT. People should definitely look elsewhere for the slower types of Metal.

Well said, dude. This band, like a lot of bad bands, relies on stage gimmickry to make up for the fact that their music totally sucks. Why anyone would pay to listen to monotinous downtuned noise is beyond me, oh wait, hipsters love Sunn O))). I'm going to de-tox myself from Sunn O))) with some Ahab.
I don't think I've heard of them and I don't think I want to now at this point LOL

Yeah, Sunn O))) is nothing but a waste of time and money. If you want metal that's "long, slow, and heavy," check out Ahab's "The Call of the Wretched Sea," Electric Wizard's "Dopethrone," and Jesu's "Sundown/Sunrise" EP to get yourself started on top-tier releases in that category.
