Super Street Fighter IV: Prima Official Game Guide - Can help that newbie who's bein' thrashed.

I am not a fan of video game guides. Personally, I prefer to meet the challenge head on and collect as many items as possible, and let everything the game has to offer me be a surprise. However, when it comes down to fighting games, this is a different story altogether. In the case of fighting games, guides are necessary because there's really no way to learn everything that a fighting game has to offer without assistance. And it's frustrating when the AI is pulling out moves, or working the new features of the internal gaming engine to own you time and time again. Super Street Fighter IV is such a game, because I know plenty of people who dislike the game due to these new features.

I believe this guide is very helpful for those who are not well rounded in Street Fighter altogether, and it's great for those like me who missed Street Fighter IV. But even though I did not play the previous game, I was still able to hold my own and even beat many players who did play the game without this book. The reason being, is that everything in the game really isn't all of that new, and most of these strategies are things a fan who has been playing for years should already know. However, if you're a complete newbie, then this book is excellent for you, because I know of tournament level players who use these tactics. Unfortunately, advanced players aren't going to get as much out of this book.

The book isn't just a no holds barred, how, and what to do guide. It's also some pretty good reading too. It's broken down into many chapters that can be found in the glossary. The characters are listed in alphabetical order and this makes the book even easier to navigate. The pages are also numbered if you happen to be rusty on your abc's. Yes, it happens to us all.

This strategy guide felt like a refresher course to me and a newbie will learn so much. The book covers all of the basic strategies, like movement and spacing, basic frame data; such as frame advantage and disadvantage, high, low, and over head attacks, charge attacks, and anti - air attacks. I found the writing very easy to follow as it doesn't use an advanced vocabulary when describing anything. To include, there are pictures with the characters performing the specific move to give readers detailed examples, and the character artwork is also a nice touch.

The tutorial doesn't stop, it covers very valuable information including hit trades, reversals, quick recovery, and damage. Training mode is brushed upon, and this is where dedicated players will spend a good amount of time at, and the book heavily encourages you to do that. The special combat features are heavily delved into; you're given a good introduction, run down of the revenge gauge and ultra combos, super gauge and super combos, special moves and ex moves, hyper armor, and focus attacks. It is also explained where these bars are located. Combos, chains, links, 2 in 1's, zoning and spacing are all hit on. There's so many features covered in this game, that I can't really imagine someone coming away saying that they didn't learn anything at all. I been playing SF ever since it first made its debut and I learned a few new things.

Now the most important part of the book will more than likely be the character coverage. All 35 characters are well covered to me. Their basic single button attacks are covered in all areas. This also includes their special and ex moves, supers and ultras, as well as strategies and recommended moves. There are list for which combos are the best, corner combos, in-depth strategies, and character types in which this is explained earlier in the book. Unlockables such as colors and alternate outfits are also revealed, so it's easy to keep track on your progress.

To keep from sounding redundant, I'll end this write up by stating that the book is highly recommended. However, the book alone is not going to make you into a great player. Like the book, I also recommend lots of practice, and spend plenty of time trying to complete the challenge mode. Another method to improve your skill is by playing against people who are better than you. You will see many different strategies out there, and this will definitely mold you into a better fighter.

Pros:
-Great for newbies
-Good strategies and breakdowns
-Plenty of character coverage

Cons:
-Advanced SF players will feel it lacking

Prima is a mixed bag for me when it came to guides before but they do a good job most of the time.
