Surfline.com is where I surf when I'm not in the water

Not long after I started surfing, I realized the value of the surf report.  When to go out, when to stay in, and where to go were the key questions.  There were plenty of wind and swell models mixed with tide data and coast patterns online that anyone who knew what they were doing could calculate the best spots to be at.  Unfortunately, I turned out to be lousy at reading these reports.  I just had no interest in putting in the time to pick up this skill set.

Fortunately, some friends pointed me to Surfline.com.  Surfline has video feeds and text reports for the top spots I tend to visit and in this case, pictures speak louder than charts.  Initially, the text reports weren't terribly useful for me as I didn't understand the surf vocabulary, but over time, they've also proved to be helpful.

Surfline's basic features are free, but you're forced to wait through 30 seconds of ads before watching any of the video, and then you only get 30 seconds of the cam and then you have to refresh and wait through the advertisement again.  They also only show 2 days worth of forecasts for the free service.

For $10/month or $70/year, you can get access to Surfline's premium member services which include 5 day forecasts and HD video feeds in certain areas.  Additionally, you don't have to wait through ads to watch video nor are you limited to 30 second increments.  At first I thought the price was pretty steep, but when I break down the cost over the number of times i surf  a year, it's a little easier to swallow.  The HD cameras are a great addition and definitely add a lot of value.

Whether you opt for the free service or the premium, I highly recommend checking out surfline.com before you hit the water.
