A book by Robert J. Sullivan

A collection of eclectic short stories from the slightly bent mind of Robert J. Sullivan - humor, science fiction, steam punk, horror, detective. "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants." - Chuckles the Clown

Very Intriguing Stories But The Author's Writing Style Gets In the Way

This review is based on a signed copy received directly from the author but reflects my own opinion.

I am always in the mood for a good collection of short stories, especially those with a science fiction and a supernatural theme. Mr. Sullivan's stories hit both themes. The first tale was quite interesting with a new take on the fashion industry. This includes clothing that is customizable by the wearer to give the wearer hundreds of options to choose from one outfit. Other tales include demons from another dimesion that are used to try to put a railroad out of business and one of my favorite tales is where a many is consistantly attacked by his shoelaces.

The author also tries to be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and gives us a Sherlock Holmes take on a werewolf attack. The last tale has a man having his whole life advised by thousands of his possible future selves. The breadth of tales shows that the author has a very productive imagination and no shortage of ideas for stories. This is a talent that most writers search for but few obtain. Where the writer fails is that his writing is often stilted and hard to follow. Even his Sherlock Holmes tales fails miserably in capturing Doyle's writing that many other authors have successfully emulated in recent times. When I think of well written short tales of these genres by recent authors I think of Orson Scott Card, Robert J. Sawyer and Stephen King. Sullivan is a far cry from these names though his ideas may rival theirs.

I hope to see this writer develop into a much better writer some day or maybe outline his ideas to someone with a more polished writing style.
