An old friend comes to new technology

In February of 2009, the Adam Carolla morning show which was based out of Los Angeles  and syndicated across the country was canceled.  The show performed well, but due to "economic conditions", was dropped due to the high production costs of the voice talents.  Instead, the radio station will degrade into yet another low cost Top 40 music jukebox station... but that's another story.

To help listeners ween themselves from the show, Adam Carolla has started recording webcasts.  I have only listened to the first one so far, but I like where this is going.  At first it's a little akward to listen to just one person monolog into a microphone, but after some initial background story and technical discussion of the operation, Adam returns to his old self... rants, funny stories, and even "made-up" movies.  Since the podcast isn't governed by the FCC, there is some language which may not be appropriate for children, but I think part of that is just a response to Adam's ability to now curse in his show.  The show did lead off with an unfortunate "stand-up" piece regarding his BM's, but fortunately, it was short.  After which, the show took on a familiar tone and spirit.

Hopefully, the show will continue to grow and develop.  Carolla has promised to bring on guests and really try to build out the show, but with a tv pilot on the way, it will be interesting to see how long it lasts.  Adam's goal is to reach out to a community of intelligent listeners in order to try to reverse the dumbing down effect in the country, so he has good intentions.

I always like to inlcude a little bit of tech speak in my reviews, so I will say that I was able to stream the Podcast in the car through the iPhone over the car stereo.  As far as I was concerned, it was not much different than listening to radio in the car normally... only without commercials.  I would love for this show to become a daily part of my commute.

So glad to hear this--not being able to listen to that show on my morning commute has become a real quality of life issue for me. Just wish I knew how to download podcasts. ;)

I realize it's not for everyone, but the iPhone has been key for me to continue listening to Carolla during my commute. Not only can you download the podcasts anytime you're on a wifi-network, but you can also stream the podcast through the phone using the cellular data connection. Check out my USA Spec review for a great car adapter: http://www.lunch.com/t/7rb

Any updates? Is he still doing it?

Carolla is still putting out an hour podcast every day. Quality definitely depends on the guest -- The Seth McFarlane (Family Guy), Jimmy Kimmel and the George Takai podcasts are great episodes. Avoid the Christopher Titus by all means, unless you want to try to identify whether Titus was on cocaine or speed during the podcast.

Totally agree on your thoughts. I hope he can keep up the podcast but time will tell. Committing to do one daily, even if it is from his house, is a pretty big commitment. Adam's first podcast was downloaded a quarter of a million times in the first 24 hours and he opened up the second podcast by saying he was having to buy more bandwidth and was looking for sponsors. If he can pick up some sponsors quickly he might be the quickest podcast to ever go from idea to revenue generating business.
